Liberian president accuses rebels of coup attempt

Liberian President Moses Blah charged that armed clashes which left at least 13 dead were an attempt by rebels to oust him and install their own leader in power. Addressing an angry mob protesting the killing of innocent civilians in Wednesday’s shoot-out, Blah said it was an attempt by LURD rebels to “overthrow me and install LURD (leader) Sekou Damate Conneh as president.” In excerpts of the speech broadcast on state radio, Blah criticized UN peacekeepers for allowing heavily armed LURD forces to travel with Conneh to planned meeting with him, and called for an investigation. Conneh was on his way to meet with Blah when his convoy came under attack in an eastern neighborhood of the capital which is home to many supporters of former president Charles Taylor, who handed over power to Blah and went into exile as part of an August peace deal.
