Palestinians in Lebanon rally in support of embattled leader Arafat

Palestinian refugees in Lebanon turned out in their thousands to their demonstrate support for veteran leader Yasser Arafat a day after Israel hinted it could expel him from his homeland. The Israeli security cabinet agreed in principle on Thursday to remove the Palestinian Authority president, branding him an “obstacle” to peace, in response to two deadly suicide bombings on Tuesday. The announcement sparked a spontaneous outpouring of support for Arafat in the West Bank and Gaza Strip as well as in Palestinian camps in Lebanon. Some 45,000 people turned out in the Rashidiye, Bourj al-Shamali and Bass camps around Tyre, 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Beirut, as well as at the country’s largest camp, Ain El-Helweh, near Saida, slightly to the north, AFP correspondents reported.
