President Alvaro Uribe said Tuesday Colombia’s insurgent groups have spread violence across the country’s borders and kidnapped 46 Venezuelans. Colombia is the world’s kidnapping capital, with nearly 3,000 people taken hostage each year. Most of the kidnapping in Colombia are carried out by leftist rebels, who hold the victims for ransom or to exchange for imprisoned guerrillas. Isolated incidents have been reported in neighboring Venezuela, but Uribe made clear the problem is wider than previously believed. Full Story
