About 300 mostly European tourists were evacuated from four beach hotels in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa after the hotels caught fire. The four hotels — Shanzu, Paradise, Coral and Palm Beach — all under the management of the African Safari Club, are situated close to each other on the Shanzu beach, north of the city. There were not reports of injuries. German troops stationed in Mombasa as part of the multi-national force against terrorism helped with the evacuation and were seen herding the tourists, mainly from Germany, France and Switzerland, into groups. The tourists held few belongings in their hands and some were barefooted as the heavily armed soldiers guided them into vehicles that drove them to other hotels in the area, an AFP reporter at the scene said.
