Philippine Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes resigned on Friday, warning that a well-funded plot existed to bring down the government a month after a mutiny by junior officers and soldiers. Reyes said attempts had been made to discredit him, his family and the armed forces in the wake of the uprising on July 27. He said he was quitting to give President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo a free hand to deal with problems in the military. Presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said Arroyo had accepted the resignation with deep regret and the president would now take on the defense portfolio. “At this time, there exists a well-organized and well-funded effort by certain forces to bring down our democracy with massive disinformation and political agitation,” Reyes said on live television without identifying the plotters. “Unless a drastic remedy is quickly found, these elements — I am convinced — are going to be the nation’s undoing.” Full Story
