Large-scale counterterrorism exercises began in Tashkent on 26 August, involving the armed forces and Interior Ministry troops, as well as special-forces units and the Emergency Situations Ministry, Deutsche Welle reported on 27 August. The exercises are being directed by the Interior Ministry, which was quoted as saying plans for the exercises are a state secret, but the objective is to practice liberating a structure seized by terrorists with a minimal loss of life. Reportedly, the exercises are the largest held in the Uzbek capital since the country became independent. Similar exercises are reportedly being held throughout the country in preparation for the celebration of Independence Day on 1 September.
