Hamas footsoldiers have been ordered to take extra precautions and its leaders have gone to ground with Israel, which has vowed no let-up in its campaign against the hardline Palestinian group. The Israeli army has carried out three air strikes against Hamas members since a massive suicide bomb in Jerusalem last week which left 21 people dead. Now all Hamas activists, from low-level fighters to political leaders, have been told to consider themselves potential targets in a new statement. And in another sign that the hardline movement is feeling the heat not only from Israel but Palestinian authorities, two of its normally voluble top cadres — Abdelaziz Rantissi and Ismail Haniya — have been out of contact for the last three days.
