ETA’s executive committee gave its authorization for funding to be sought in the United States through its contacts in the city of Los Angeles and “around Reno”, according to a report by the Civil Guard. It was seeking money in order to ease the financial situation of Egunkaria SA, which published the [Basque language] newspaper that was closed down by National High Court judge Juan del Olmo, who regarded the publication as an instrument of the terrorist band, according to a report by [Spanish news agency] Europa Press. According to ETA papers seized by the Civil Guard in recent anti-terrorist organizations in both Spain and the south of France, ETA gave its authorization for KAS [Patriotic Socialist Coordinator – illegal Basque separatist umbrella organization] structures and its own structures on the American continent to be used, after acknowledging in a document that the newspaper’s financial situation “is a little tight”, adding that it is having serious problems in making payments and a stagnation-fall in sales has been noted.
