President Mohammad Khatami of Iran demanded an apology from Britain today for the arrest of a former diplomat accused of playing a role in the bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires in 1994. Mr. Khatami also demanded the release of the former diplomat, Hadi Soleimanpour. “I declare from here that the British government will have to cease carrying on with this incorrect deed in a short period of time and apologize,” Mr. Khatami said after visiting the shrine to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, founder of Iran’s Islamic state. “What has happened has been politically motivated,” he said, according to Iranian radio. “There are forces and lobbies behind the case trying to put the Islamic Republic under pressure by leveling baseless accusations and unfounded allegations against Tehran.” Full Story
