Indonesian police said yesterday that terror mastermind Hambali was behind 39 bombing attacks across the country over the past two years as they made a case for him to be brought back to Indonesia. Chief investigator Commissioner General Erwin Mappaseng said the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) operations chief masterminded the string of bombings that killed hundreds of people between May 2000 and the Bali blasts last October. Advertisement Among the targets were churches and Christian priests as it was Hambali’s intention to provoke sectarian conflict in the country, said the general. Gen Erwin said Indonesia hoped Hambali, who is currently in US custody, could be handed over to Jakarta to be tried for the series of bombings in the country. ‘We have a strong interest in Hambali because he has to take responsibility for the bombings and because he may help us uncover the terrorist network in Indonesia,’ he told journalists here.
