Security was tightened as the World Student Games opened after the national intelligence agency issued an alert that Islamic extremists could be planning an attack. Athletes from the United States and Britain were in particular being given added protection, police said Thursday. “We have received an intelligence report from abroad that the Universiade in Daegu is included in the list of possible attack targets by Islamic extremist groups,” a National Intelligence Service (NIS) spokesman said. “Consequently, we have alerted all related government agents to the danger so that they take all necessary measures to ensure security at the games,” he said.
