Two Palestinian suicide bombers struck in Israel and the West Bank on Tuesday, killing two people and shattering six weeks of relative calm ushered in by a cease-fire designed to bolster a new peace plan. The militant Islamic group Hamas claimed responsibility for the West Bank attack. There was no claim of responsibility for the earlier suicide bombing that killed one person in central Israel. The explosions threatened to derail the two-month-old, U.S.-engineered “road map” plan, already in trouble amid recriminations between Palestinians and Israelis over non-compliance with its terms.
