Rebels to leave Liberian port

The United States ambassador to Liberia says rebels in Monrovia have agreed to pull back from the vital port area to allow for the free-flow of food and aid. The presence of rebels at the port has stopped humanitarian aid reaching hundreds of thousands of famished refugees in the Liberian capital. Ambassador John Blaney said West African peacekeeping troops would enter the area from noon on Thursday. He added that the rebel Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (Lurd) had agreed to pull back beyond the outskirts of the city but did not say when that might happen. Mr Blaney told a news conference: “We’ve just concluded discussions of a deal with Lurd that will give permissive entry of peacekeepers into this area… that includes the Freeport.” Full Story
