A defense attorney representing 13 of the 14 defendants in the killing of an Australian missionary and his two sons claimed on Thursday that federal investigators had falsely implicated his clients. Defense attorney Bana Mohanty noted that police had charged the 13 with murder nearly three months after missionary Graham Staines and his sons were burned to death by armed attackers in their jeep outside a church in Manoharpur, a village in Orissa state. The case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation, India’s FBI, immediately after the crime did not include their names as suspects, Mohanty said. The key suspect, Dara Singh, was arrested a year later. Federal investigators say they learned of the alleged involvement of the 13 suspects only after several months of investigation. All 14 suspects have been charged with murder and face the death penalty if convicted. They have denied any wrongdoing. Full Story
