A priest whose name appeared on a hit-list prepared by the Basque separatist organisation Eta has decided to quit the parish in northern Spain he has served for 34 years. He said he had received “strong pressures” to do so over the past few months. Jaime Larrinaga is the first priest to join growing numbers of his compatriots who have fled the Basque country for their personal safety. Fr Larrinaga said he would make a formal farewell to his parishioners in the village of Maruri, near Bilbao, at mass on Sunday, when he would explain the reasons for his departure. The priest, who founded the “Saviour Forum”, an association of non-nationalist Basque priests, has seen his Sunday services besieged by demonstrators hurling insults and urging him to “stop lying”.
