West African peacekeepers will arrive in Liberia early next week – maybe as early as Monday – and President Charles Taylor will go into exile three days later, African leaders said Thursday. The leaders said a vanguard of troops from Nigeria will lead the peacekeepers. The force will provide the “appropriate conditions for the handover of power, and departure from Liberia, of President Charles Taylor,” said Mohamed Ibn Chambas, executive secretary of the West African leaders’ bloc. The group, including the presidents of Nigeria, Ghana and Togo, has been meeting to discuss how to speed up the arrival of the peacekeepers. Full Story
