Army staged bombings, rebels say

A military mutiny in the Philippines has provided dramatic new evidence to support allegations that corrupt soldiers are staging bombings and fomenting violence to exploit the U.S.-led antiterrorism struggle. The allegations of military involvement in terrorist-style bombings were at the heart of the grievances of the 300 disgruntled young soldiers and officers who seized a hotel and shopping mall in Manila’s central business district on Sunday. The rebels charged that the Philippine military had masterminded the deadly wave of bombings that killed and injured more than 100 people in the largely Muslim region of Mindanao this spring. They said the army had staged the bombings to make it easier to portray Muslim separatists as a terrorist organization, allowing the army to gain financial aid from the United States. Full Story
