The 11 Pakistani nationals released this month by the US military from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, are to stay behind bars indefinitely in their own country for further investigation. Faisal Saleh Hayat, interior minister, told the Financial Times: “We want to determine the background and linkages of these prisoners before we consider their release.” He gave no indication on the duration of the detention. The decision to detain the 11 was expected to give confidence to US officials to consider releasing some of the remaining 42 Pakistanis still in custody at Guantanamo Bay , senior government officials added. Four Pakistanis were released late last year. Western officials agreed that the ability of theauthorities to detain the returnees for longer periods may help persuade US officials to release Pakistanis in the knowledge that they would remain in Pakistani custody even after their return.
