The UVF [Ulster Volunteer Force] is suspected of carrying out a vicious assault in the Waterside area of Derry which left a 43-year-old man with a fractured skull. As the victim walked along Bond Street around 5.15pm on Sunday, he was bundled into a car by a gang of four men. The man was taken to an unknown location and severely beaten, sustaining a fractured skull, fractured ribs, a fractured shoulder and severe bruising. A police spokesman said the incident bore all the hallmarks of a loyalist paramilitary assault, although he was unable to say which group was involved. “This was an extremely serious assault in which a man sustained very serious injuries,” he said.
