A British national has been arrested in north-east India on charges of maintaining close links with Naga separatist rebels. David Ward, who is from Edinburgh, was detained in Nagaland state on Sunday, police said on Tuesday. Mr Ward heads a UK-based organisation, Naga Vigil, which monitors human rights violations in areas inhabited by Naga tribes. But the authorities allege that he has close ties to Naga separatist rebels fighting for independence from India. “Ward was arrested on charges of aiding and abetting separatist insurgency, besides not possessing any valid travel documents,” additional police chief NN Walling told the AFP news agency.
