Masked Gunmen Attack Canadian Mining Camp in Peru, Killing Geologist: Five masked gunmen attacked a Canadian mining camp in the Andes, killing a Peruvian geologist, wounding another and stealing equipment, police said Wednesday. Maoist Shining Path rebels were initially suspected in the attack, but a representative from Canadian company Barrick Misquichilca, which operates the camp, said he believed the attackers were bandits and not guerrillas. The raid occurred near the village of Azanbamba, some 250 miles southeast of Lima in the Ayacucho region, police said. Police on Wednesday also reported two incidents involving Shining Path guerrillas this week that indicate that a recent guerrilla resurgence is spreading southward across Peru’s Ayacucho region.
