Hundreds of online Absa clients closed their Internet banking accounts this week after the theft of more than R500 000 by a hacker who gained access to their personal information on their PCs. And another hacker, identified as “7up”, had hacked into at least 52 websites, mainly in the Western Cape and defaced them. Absa spokesperson Deon Oosthuizen said, while he was not “at liberty” to disclose the exact number of accounts closed, “there were hundreds”. He added that “we still experienced a growth in people starting to use online banking services in spite of what happened last week”. Full Story
