Two bombs tore through hotels in the Spanish resorts of Benidorm and Alicante yesterday, injuring 10 people including an Englishwoman. The bombs, planted by Eta Basque separatists, were timed to go off at the busiest part of the day – just after noon local time – at the high point of the holiday season in two of Spain’s most popular destinations. As well as unnerving tourists, the bomb blasts prompted alarm among ministers, who fear that this opening salvo in Eta’s annual summer terror campaign will have a devastating impact on Spain’s mighty tourism industry. “It’s obvious that this is about trying to introduce what we could call the annual quota of fear in Spaniards’ summer break, which every year the terrorists try to do,” Jose Maria Aznar, the Prime Minister, said in Madrid, after a meeting with Bertie Ahern, his Irish counterpart.
