Nigerians in the south-east are spending their third week in darkness as disruption to their electricity supply has degenerated into a major power crisis. Lights went off at the beginning of this month, and since then daily life for about six million residents in five affected states – Benue, Ebonyi, Enugu, Taraba and parts of Cross River State – has become increasingly difficult and uncomfortable. According to the general manager, in charge of the power transmission in Enugu, the problem started after vandals damaged a cable which carries electricity from Enugu to the affected regions. The BBC’s Network Africa reporter in Enugu, Chukwujama Ezeh, says that due to the gravity of the problem the Nigerian Electric Power Authority, (Nepa) had to fly in experts to help local engineers repair the damage.
