Irish 'Gang-Busters' Hit Real IRA Leader in Pocket
An Irish agency that targets criminals’ financial assets has hit a jailed Real IRA leader with a one million dollar tax bill and plans to pursue others in the dissident republican group, officials said on Tuesday. Ireland’s Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) said it had got a High Court judgment against Liam Campbell, a senior figure in the group responsible for the 1998 Omagh bombing, which killed 29 people. “We have said in our affidavit that we suspect (Campbell) to have been involved in smuggling activities — oil or cigarette smuggling that would generate huge profits for himself and his gang,” Chief Superintendent Felix McKenna, who leads the CAB, told Reuters.
