US embassy under fire in battle for Monrovia

Mortar shells slammed into the US embassy in the Liberian capital, Monrovia, yesterday during an increasingly bloody battle for the city between rebel and government forces. Several people in the fortified compound were wounded but outside it was much worse. At least 60 people were killed in the latest onslaught in the west African country’s civil war, and angry locals dragged bodies in front of the embassy to protest at the US reluctance to intervene. The US military deployed 41 marines from a base in Spain to boost security at the embassy, and 4,500 US troops on three warships were moved into the Mediterranean as a contingency measure.
