Fighting ebbed in the Liberian capital Monrovia overnight, as rebels refused to sign a west African brokered peace pact to end a ruinous four-year civil war, with up to 700 civilians reportedly killed in recent days. Shelling abated in the city centre and only stray fire was heard in the Mamba Point diplomatic area, where several shells had landed in the day.
