Seven police and one soldier were killed in a gunfight with leftist rebels when a search party for 15 recently kidnapped people was ambushed in the mountains of western Colombia, police said. “The police patrol following the bandits with the army’s support was ambushed in the mountain region of Risaralda, with a tragic toll for our side of seven police and one soldier killed and four army troops wounded,” Caldas police chief Rodolfo Palomino Lopez told reporters. He said the combined security force was chasing a group of guerrillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), who hours earlier had kidnapped 15 people on a road linking the Risaralda and Caldas departments.
