About 5,000 right-wing militia fighters will gather in northwest Colombia within three months as part of a plan to demobilize by the end of 2005, the chief of the nation’s largest paramilitary group said. In an interview with Caracol television broadcast Monday, Carlos Castano also said the decision to disarm his men was irreversible. “The paramilitaries have reached their end,” said the leader, dressed in camouflage fatigues. Castano’s United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia promised last week to begin peace talks with the government and start demobilizing its 13,000 fighters by the end of the year. Full Story
