Nine political activists were killed in the first five days of official campaigning for the July 27 national Cambodian elections, a group of independent election monitors said on Wednesday. “We have seen that violent acts are still increasing in the first week of the election campaign,” the group said in a joint statement. “There are eight cases of attacks that killed nine activists from political parties.” The group of local election monitors included human rights group Adhoc, the Committee for Free and Fair Elections, the Neutral and Impartial Committee for Free and Fair Elections in Cambodia and the Cambodian Youth Council. They said the killings took place in six provinces and the dead people were from the three main political parties contesting the polls — the Cambodian Peoples Party (CPP), FUNCINPEC and the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP).
