President Assad of Syria has offered to help free Israeli troops and a civilian being held as hostages in Lebanon in an effort to revive direct negotiations with Israel. In a conversation with the United Nations Middle East envoy, Terje Roed Larsen, Mr Assad said he knew the whereabouts of the captured Israelis. Some are dead, he said, but others are still alive. He said he is prepared to negotiate their release in return for the freeing of two Syrians he said are being held by Israel.
