United States Ambassador Roger Meece praised Malawi’s government on Thursday for arresting five al-Qaeda suspects last month and handing them over to US authorities. The five Muslim men had been secretly taken from the country after they were arrested June 22 in a joint US-Malawi operation. The men, who never appeared in a Malawi court, were moved from the country despite a court order preventing their deportation. Those events sparked countrywide protests by Malawi’s Muslim community. Meece, the outgoing ambassador, praised Malawi’s actions. “By handing over the suspects, the Malawi government showed it is a partner in the fight against global terrorism,” he told journalists on Thursday after meeting with President Bakili Muluzi.
