Abu Sayyaf is the latest and most deadly group to emerge from a long-running campaign by Muslim separatists in the Philippines. The group, which Australia is helping to fight against, kills and kidnaps for ransom. Australia’s main concern is the links that Abu Sayyaf has with al-Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiah (JI), which was responsible for the Bali bombings that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians. It is seen as part of the international terrorist network. Damage it, and the whole deadly edifice is hurt. But it is only one of a cocktail of groups that has made the southern Philippines a key part of the fight against terrorism. Full Story
