Soldiers killed 15 rebels, including a commander, and set his hideout ablaze during recent raids in Aceh province, an army spokesman said yesterday. Soldiers shot and killed Abdur Rahman Adam, a mid-level rebel commander, after burning down the house in which he was hiding in northern Aceh in a pre-dawn raid on Saturday, Lieutenant-Colonel Ahmad Yani Basuki said. Troops also killed 14 other rebels and arrested seven others in clashes on Friday and Saturday, he said. Lt-Col Basuki said the military seized at an ironsmith’s shop more than 10,000 AK-47 bullets allegedly sent from Jakarta by a rebel arms supplier. Rebels destroyed a bridge and a local television transmitting station, he said. ‘The soldiers have killed many of us, but more will take their place,’ rebel spokesman Bachtiar Abdullah said from Sweden, where many of the movement’s leaders live in exile.
