India’s main Muslim body has rejected suggestions by a Hindu seer to solve a simmering dispute over a religious site. The proposals were meant to defuse a row over the site of a 16th-century mosque which was razed by Hindu zealots in 1992. But the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) said the ideas were unacceptable. ‘The board puts on record that it looks upon the proposals as thinly veiled threats to the Muslims to surrender and submit themselves unconditionally to all the unreasonable demands made by the Hindu outfits,’ said spokesman Y.H. Muchhala. ‘The board, therefore, resolves that just as such proposals are not reasonable, they are totally inconsistent with the honour, dignity and self-respect of Indian Muslims, and the same therefore cannot be accepted.’ Full Story
