Intelligence agencies believe that the attacks on police in Pattani last week were carried out by two groups of Muslim terrorists. An intelligence source said intelligence agencies had interviewed locals and believed that the Pattani United Liberation Organisation and the Pattani Mujahideen Group carried out the attacks on police in three districts last Thursday. The source said locals had seen leaders of the group in Pattani a day before the attacks. The agencies believe it was in the Malaysian border state of Kelantan that the two groups planned the simultaneous attacks, then travelled to Thailand by boat to launch them before retreating to Malaysia. Meanwhile, in Narathiwat, police said the shooting and killing of assistant village head Boonlert Sinil on Saturday morning could have been either motivated by personal conflict or the result of a terrorist attack.
