Central Florida emergency officials practiced Wednesday for a scene they hope never to see — terrorists attacking downtown Orlando and Walt Disney World. Although homeland-security officials said the mock disasters — a chemical leak and a hostage crisis — were not tied to any specific, confirmed threats, they said the drills were essential. “Ultimately, our goal is to prevent an attack from happening,” said Joyce Dawley, co-director of the Regional Domestic Security Task Force. The Wednesday-morning simulations made downtown Orlando look like a Hollywood backlot. A silver tanker, supposedly filled with chlorine and left by terrorists, blocked Church Street Station.
