Thai police beefed up security at international schools and tourist resorts yesterday, citing fresh intelligence reports of an increased risk of an attack on Australian, British, US and Israeli nationals. An internal police memo obtained by Reuters ordered police units to step up patrols at beach resorts such as Pattaya, Phuket and Samui and at Western-run businesses. “All commanders of the following units must proceed with the following orders, since under current circumstances, there have been indications that there might be a terrorist attack or unrest,” the memo said. The memo also instructed police units to monitor imports of explosives by local firms. The circular, dated June 30, was issued a week after national police chief Sant Sarutanond said the country had been warned by international intelligence agencies of possible suicide bomb attacks on its territory.
