Malaysians should prepare themselves for an increase in hacking and virus attacks, cautioned Chia Kwang Chye, Parliamentary Secretary at the Energy, Communications and Multimedia Ministry. According to Chia, the number of reported threats from the beginning of this year up to May had already reached the 43% mark of the total number of cases reported in the whole of 2002. Statistics compiled by the Malaysian Computer Emergency Response Team (MyCERT) showed that there were 739 reported cases of network abuses last year. Of this, 301 or 40% were classified as hacking threats while another 225 cases (35%) were computer virus attacks. Chia said that up to May, the number of reported incidents totalled 318, of which 46% were classified as hacking threats while 31% were virus attacks. Full Story
