Israel pulled its tanks and troops from northern Gaza on Sunday, hours after the leading Palestinian militant groups for the first time announced a three-month cease-fire. The vow to end attacks on Israel and the troop withdrawal provided a much-needed boost to a U.S.-sponsored initiative, called the ”road map,” which seeks to restart peace talks with the goal of ending 2 years of fighting. Even so, Israel said the cease-fire would serve only to give militants a chance to regroup for attacks.
