Fifteen rebels were killed and another was wounded in fresh fighting with government troops in Indonesia’s Aceh province, the military said Sunday. Some of the most fierce fighting in the past week took place in northern Aceh Saturday, bringing to more than 300 the total number of people killed since the government launched on May 19 its biggest offensive to date to crush the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). Aceh military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Achmad Yani Basuki said six rebels were shot dead at Sidomulyo village and another was killed in Alu Dua village, both in North Aceh. “Ammunition, AK-47 weapons, pistols, a GAM flag, a bag of explosives and a home-made bomb were found at both sites,” Basuki told Reuters by telephone from the northern Aceh military base of Lhokseumawe.
