Radical Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Ba’asyir approved the bombings of several churches and planned to assassinate President Megawati Sukarnoputri, a Malaysian militant has told a court in Jakarta. Speaking at Ba’asyir’s treason trial via video link from Singapore, Faiz bin Abu Bakar Bafana said the cleric backed a series of church bombings across Indonesia on Christmas Eve 2000 that killed 19 people and wounded scores more. Bafana, who is bring held in jail in Singapore under the country’s Internal Security Act, also named Ba’asyir as the spiritual head of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist group — the network thought to have been behind last years bomb attacks on the island of Bali.
