The spiritual leader of Australia’s Islamic community has complained of victimization after being subjected to a “humiliating” search at Sydney airport. In an indication of how sensitive the allegations were, Prime Minister John Howard on Friday immediately denied that 62-year-old Sheik Taj El Din Al Hilaly was improperly treated. Al Hilaly was among a group returning from a conference in New Zealand this week when he was stopped and his bags searched by customs officials, his spokesman, Kayser Trad, said. “They searched their bags thoroughly, (including) bits of paper — everything — and were asked some very probing questions which did not really have any relation to the search,” Trad said.
