Australia is one of just three countries where regional Asian terror group Jemaah Islamiah exists, according a senior JI member turned informer who yesterday spent two hours exposing the inner workings of the group blamed for the Bali bombings. In the first detailed court evidence about JI, Faiz bin abu Bakar Bafana told Central Jakarta District Court that Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Bashir was head of JI, that he had personally approved two Indonesian bombing campaigns, and had proposed and ordered the assassination of then Indonesian vice-president Megawati Soekarnoputri. He told the court hearing treason charges against Bashir that the JI leader or “emir” had written a letter appointing one of the alleged Bali bombers, Mukhlas, as head of a JI cell called Mantiqi 1 with responsibility for JI activities in Singapore and Malaysia.
