Troops loyal to Liberian President Charles Taylor have driven rebels out of the port area in the capital Monrovia, military officials said. Rebel fighters have now pulled back to the city’s outskirts, about 10 km (6 miles) from the city center, officials told Reuters Thursday, while residents reported a lull in the fighting after an intense night of mortar and rocket fire. “Our men managed to push them from the position they occupied over the last 24 hours up to Duala and beyond but we still intend to push them further,” one military official said. Duala, a market area, is on the Monrovia side of St. Paul’s River Bridge, a key access point into the city.
