Explosions apparently caused by mortar shells rocked the U.S. and European Union diplomatic compounds in Liberia’s capital Wednesday, causing injuries among thousands of people seeking refuge from a raging civil war. Witnesses said at least one shell apparently landed within the compound. People could be seen carrying wounded survivors out. Authorities within the U.S. Embassy could not immediately be reached for comment. An Associated Press reporter and photographer at the scene felt the ground shake from the two explosions. The blasts appeared to be mortar rounds. Survivors ran past with wounded, wheeling one bleeding young man out in a wheelbarrow and using a ragged shirt as a stretcher for another victim. Full Story
