The search for peace in the Mideast intruded on an American-European summit Wednesday with President Bush’s demand that European leaders cut off all funding to the militant Palestinian group Hamas. “The president thinks it’s very important, and he will talk about this today, for European nations to rally to the call of fighting terrorism and that includes to stop funding Hamas in all its forms,” White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said as U.S. and European officials gathered at the White House for an annual talkfest. Fleischer said the president would urge his European counterparts to crack down on the resources that flow to Hamas from their countries — whether through charities, individuals or other sources. The official agenda for the meeting, meanwhile, focused on the announcement of a host of new agreements in areas dear to Bush — fighting terrorism and curbing the spread of weapons of mass destruction among them — in a bid to rebuild ties strained over the Iraq war.
