Coalition authorities are hunting those responsible for the deaths Tuesday of six British soldiers in southern Iraq. Unconfirmed reports said the six soldiers were slain by townspeople angry over recent weapons searches and the quelling of civilian demonstrations. British authorities said they were still trying to piece together exactly what happened. “British commanders are investigating with a matter of urgency,” said British Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon. Until the attacks Tuesday, hostility in southern Iraq — which the British have controlled since the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime — has been less than in the north, where U.S. forces have come under regular attack. British soldiers had felt secure enough to patrol the southern city of Basra without helmets and flak jackets, but they are wearing them again and are on higher alert. Full Story
