Hacker paying debt to society, parents

When the “Pizza Samurai” sent out 31,000 e-mails canceling classes for Green Beer Day at Miami University last March, school officials instantly popped their corks. The college senior was prosecuted for a computer crime and faced the possibility of prison. Every e-mail to students, staff and faculty carried the fake signature of the school’s president, Jim Garland. But now the hacker has Garland as a backer. Miami’s president has sent a $10 donation to help the practi- cal joker pay off his legal fees, which climbed to about $5,000 for the com puter crime. Garland ex plained in an e- mail that he ad mired the hoax er’s spirit and his willingness to accept responsibility for the prank. He said he looks forward to seeing the Pizza Samurai, who in everyday life is Ben Field, at December graduation ceremonies. Full Story
