A Qatari man already in U.S. custody is allegedly an al Qaeda “sleeper” operative whose job was to settle other al Qaeda members in the United States, the Justice Department said on Monday. Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri was “tasked to help new al Qaeda operatives get settled in the United States for follow-on attacks after Sept. 11,” Deputy Assistant Attorney General Alice Fisher told reporters. Al-Marri, previously under criminal indictment for making false statements to FBI agents, had also been taught how to use poisons, Fisher told reporters.
